What is motorhome insurance?
Motorhome insurance covers your motorhome when it’s parked up or out on the road.
A comprehensive policy will cover you for things like:
- Traffic accidents
- Repairing damage to your motorhome or other vehicles
- Fire damage
- Storm damage
- Theft and damage caused by break-ins
- Injury to you and your passengers, pedestrians, other drivers and their passengers
If you own a vehicle that you can live in, whether that’s a campervan or a motorhome, it’s a legal requirement to have insurance to drive or park it on UK roads.

Why compare motorhome insurance with us?
What level of motorhome cover do I need?
There are three levels of motorhome insurance to choose from. Legally, you only need third party cover, but it will not protect you or your motorhome if you’re in an accident. Compare different types of policies to find the level of cover you feel most comfortable with.
Comprehensive
- Covers damage to your motorhome if you’re involved in a collision
- Also covers injury to you or your passengers
- Protection from fire damage, or if your motorhome’s stolen
- Covers injury to other people, or damage to their property
Third party, fire and theft
- Protects you financially if your motorhome is damaged by fire
- Also covers you if your motorhome is stolen, or damaged by attempted theft
- Covers injury to third parties, or damage to their property
- Does not cover damage to your motorhome caused by a collision, or injury to you
Third party only
- The most basic level of cover, but not usually the cheapest
- Only covers injury to third parties or damage to their property
- Does not cover theft of your motorhome, or damage caused by fire
- Does not cover you or your motorhome if you’re involved in an accident
Does motorhome insurance cover my campers contents?
Comprehensive motorhome insurance usually protects the camper’s contents.
This includes things like:
- Campervan accessories e.g. awnings
- Cooking utensils
- Camping equipment
- Other personal possessions that make your van feel like home
If your policy doesn’t include content cover, you may be able to buy it as a policy add-on.

I’ve converted my van myself. What insurance do I need?
If you’ve converted your own van, it’s best to compare insurance for modified vans. You may get quotes from standard providers, but it’s more likely you’ll get cover to suit your requirements from specialist campervan insurance providers.
It’s worth noting that modified campervan insurance differs from modified van insurance. Modifying a van means you’re changing it from its factory build, and this can work out more expensive than standard van insurance.
Yet converting it to a camper, in other words adapting it for sleeping and cooking, can actually result in cheaper insurance. This is because campers tend not to be used daily and do not usually carry work tools and equipment.
How can I get cheap motorhome insurance?
There are several ways you might be able to save on your motorhome or campervan cover:
1
Pay annually
If you can, paying your insurance in one go usually means it’ll be cheaper. While you might like the idea of spreading the cost over monthly instalments, insurers will add interest onto your premium.
2
Join a camping club or association
Being a member of a camping club or association can get you a discount on your premium. You’ll have to provide the insurer with proof that you’re a member.
3
Get qualified
Getting some advanced driving qualifications could net you a discount.
4
Park somewhere safe
Use your garage or driveway if you have one – parking on the road comes with extra risks that can make insurance more expensive.
5
Beware of add-ons
Only buy the extra insurance features you need – so don’t add breakdown insurance if you have another policy that covers you already.
6
Shop around

Our expert says...
Any changes you make to your van need to be declared to your insurer. Things like removing seats, installing kitchen fittings, adding generators and so on need to be weighed up by insurers when pricing your policy. It’s always worth letting your insurer know, to make sure you’re not left underinsured.

Classes of motorhome use
When you get quotes for motorhome insurance, you’ll be asked how you intend to use your motorhome. There are three levels of cover to choose from.
Commuting
You’re protected going to and from a single place of work.
Personal business use
You’re still covered for commuting to your place of work, plus business meetings and events held elsewhere.
Social, domestic and pleasure
Non-business trips are covered, like the school run, shopping, trips out with the family and going camping. But you couldn’t use the motorhome to go to work.
Add-ons for motorhome insurance
Some policy extras may be included as standard by some providers, or you can usually add them for a fee.
Note that they all add up, so only add what you really need.
Breakdown cover
Breakdown cover can be invaluable if your motorhome or camper grinds to a halt. It may be cheaper to buy this separately from your motorhome insurance, so always compare the price of standalone cover with anything bundled into a policy. Take features into account, as well as price.
Driving in the EU
Your policy may cover you for driving in Europe, so double-check the level of cover. Motorhome insurance often covers driving in the EU third party only, so see if you can upgrade to comprehensive if you’d feel more comfortable with a greater level of protection.
Loss of use cover
A motorhome is more than just a vehicle – it’s a roof over your head. Loss of use can cover the cost of alternative accommodation if your motorhome is out of action, such as if it’s in a garage for repair.
Legal cover
Legal expenses cover, otherwise known as motor legal protection, helps you claim from the party responsible if you’re involved in an accident that isn’t your fault. It can also cover legal expenses to the policy limit if a claim is brought against you.
Emergency accommodation
Provides alternative accommodation if your motorhome is out of action.
What details do I need to get a quote?
To get a quote for your motorhome or campervan, just tell us a few details about you and your vehicle:

1. About you
Your name, address and age, plus details of any previous claims or driving convictions.
2. Your motorhome
Make and model of your vehicle, plus its value, and any accessories or modifications.
3. Your usage and cover
Tell us how you intend to use the vehicle, your estimated annual mileage, where it’s usually parked, and your preferred cover and add-ons.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive a motorhome on my car insurance?
No. Motorhomes aren’t used in the same way as cars, for instance staying in the vehicle overnight or cooking in it, so they carry a very different set of risks that need specialist insurance.
Do I need motorhome insurance?
Yes. It’s a legal requirement to have insurance for your motorhome.
You must have at least third party cover to drive on UK roads, because you need to be financially protected if you have a collision with a third party, such as another road user.
If you do not have the right insurance, the police can issue you a fixed penalty of £300 and six points on your licence.
If the case goes to court, this could go up to an unlimited fine and a potential driving ban.
Does motorhome insurance cover tourer caravans?
Motorhome insurance and caravan insurance are usually separate policies. It might be possible that your motorhome insurance only covers injury that your caravan causes to third parties while it’s being towed, or damage to their property. Check your policy carefully.
To protect your caravan against damage or theft, you’ll likely have to take out additional caravan insurance.
What factors affect the cost of my campervan insurance?
The cost of campervan or motorhome insurance depends on factors, like:
- Your mileage – Keeping your annual mileage down means you’re less likely to make a claim, usually resulting in cheaper premiums
- How you use your vehicle – If you use your camper for daily driving and commuting, your insurance will cost more. If you only use it for holidays and leisure, it’ll be cheaper to cover
- Your no-claims discount – A few years of claim-free driving can substantially reduce your premiums. You can even use your no-claims history earned on a car, if your campervan is your only vehicle
- The type of vehicle – From converted VW buses to quirky micro-campers, our panel of insurers specialise in all sorts of vehicles so you should be able to find cover
- Club discounts – Being a member of a caravan club or association could get you a discount on your campervan or motorhome insurance
Do I have to declare a campervan conversion?
Yes. If you convert a vehicle into a campervan, you need to declare it both to your insurer and to the DVLA. Find out more about what to do if you convert a vehicle into a motor caravan.
Even if it’s not a full conversion, you need to declare any modifications carried out on a campervan or motorhome to your insurance provider.
This is likely to affect the price you pay for your insurance.
What type of motorhomes and campervans can I insure?
You can usually find out if we can find insurance for your vehicle by entering its registration. The main types of motorhome and campervan we can cover include:
- A class
- Coachbuilt
- Coachbuilt – Low profile
- Camper – Elevating roof
- Camper – Fixed roof
